William was born as Velvel (or Welwel) Magerman to Hinda Magerman and Chaim Leib Magerman in Podolska, Ukraine. He was one of four; Rosa (Rose), Israel (Jacob) and Boruch (Benjamin). Hinda and her children fled from Ukraine to South America, and ultimately, to the United States on November the 12th 1922.
