Robert was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he lived until 1978. In 1978 his family moved to San Antonio, Texas, where they are still living today. Robert graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1989, with fellow classmate Ricardo Chavira. He is also the cousin of Tom Ketterer.
