Born on an Air Force base in Germany. He lived in Las Cruces, Alamogordo, and Clovis, New Mexico, as well as Tucson, Arizona, and Lebanon, Oregon. He graduated with a B.S. from Oregon State University (Music). In college, he worked as a ranch hand, DJ, veterinary hospital assistant, and small engine mechanic. He has lived in Los Angeles since 2008.
