Dorothy was born and grew up in Nottinghamshire as Caroline Dorothy Atkinson. She is known recently for Mr Turner (2014) and Call the Midwife (2012). She first worked with Mike Leigh in Topsy Turvy (2000) where she met her husband, actor Martin Savage. They have one child. She has also worked extensively in theatre in the UK and on Broadway.
