Born in Rome in 1951, he is the brother of Enrico Vanzina, movie writer: the two are the sons of Steno (aka Stefano Vanzina). Carlo studied in a French school in Rome. He began his professional career in cinematography in 1969 as assistant director to his father and Mario Monicelli.
